3 questions for Evgeny Petrov

Evgeny Petrov has been Assistant Professor of Accounting at the Department of Business Administration since 1 October 2023. In a short interview, he talks about what he wants to achieve in research and teaching.

What do you focus on in your research?

My primary focus is analytical research in financial accounting and auditing. I am particularly interested in corporate voluntary disclosure, earnings management behavior, and information spillovers between firms. I am also interested in how the properties of the financial market (informed trading, feedback effect, and learning) affect the disclosure of public firms. In my research, I aim at analytically explaining existing empirical regularities and providing novel empirical predictions to help other researchers better understand institutional accounting phenomena.

What would you like to convey to your students?

In my opinion, the main goal of teaching at a university is not just to provide knowledge and evaluate, but to share experience, encourage to be proactive, and guide. A university course is a platform for communication, not just a structured one-directional flow of information.

What were the decisive factors for you to join the University of Zurich?

I chose the University of Zurich over other options because I wanted to join its excellent accounting group that shares my research interests. I was also thrilled to come back to Switzerland. I defended my Ph.D. at EPFL in 2017, and I am happy that I could return to the country that I know well and where many of my friends live.
