Various grants and awards for researchers at our Faculty

An overview of various grants and awards that professors and postdocs from our Faculty received for their research last year.*

Grants

Department of Business Administration

  • Prof. René Algesheimer, together with Susanna Flühmann, has received an SNSF grant of CHF 376,782 for the project “Advancing social sensing to trigger the large-scale diffusion of environmental action”.
  • Prof. Luis Aguiar has received an ERC Consolidator Grant of totaling EUR 1,983,075 for the project “Rethinking Copyright Policy in the Digital Age: Balancing Incentives for Creation and Access”.
  • Prof. Robert F. Göx and Prof. Ulrich Schäfer, a former postdoc of Robert F. Göx, have received a grant totaling CHF 268,180 for the Weave project “Measuring Carbon Offsets: Information Quality and Real Effects”. CHF 178,365 will go to UZH via the SNF and CHF 89,815 to the University of Vienna via the FWF.
  • Prof. David Seidl received an SNFS grant of CHF 815'440 for the project “Effectively responding to strategic issues: A Strategy-as-Practice perspective”.​

Department of Economics

  • Prof. Lorenzo Casaburi has received an ERC Consolidator Grant of totaling EUR 1,998,750 for the project “Land Markets and Economic Development”.
  • Prof. Maya Eden has received an ERC Consolidator Grant of totaling EUR 1,993,568 for the project “Non-UtilitarianPerspectives on Population Policy”.
  • Prof. Christian Ruff received SNSF funding for his project “Using Machine Learning to Reveal the Neurocomputational Architecture of Theory of Mind”; CHF 997’200.-​
  • Prof. Ulf Zölitz received SNSF funding for his project “Assigned by Algorithms? Using Machine-Learning to Optimize Peer Group Allocation”; CHF 468’482.-

Department of Finance

  • Prof. Markus Leippold has received an EU HORIZON grant together with University College Dublin, BWB Connect (Dublin), Global Canopy (Oxford), University of Oxford, LGI Sustainable Innovation (Paris), WCMC LBG (Cambridge), International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Laxenburg), Università Ca' Foscari (Venice), University of Utrecht, University of Hamburg, Asociatia Agent Green (Bucharest), Szkola Glowna Handlowa (Warsaw), CDC Biodiversite (Paris) and Value Balancing Alliance (Frankfurt) of CHF 748,125.00 (financed by SERI) for the project “Nature-3B: Including Nature in decision making of central Banks, investment Benchmarks & Bond issuers”.
  • Prof. Steven Ongena, together with Gazi Kabas from Tilburg University, has received an SNSF grant of CHF 349,010 for the project “Mortgage Borrowing Constraints Beyond the Housing Market”. 

Department of Informatics

  • Prof. Dan Olteanu has received an SNSF grant of CHF 490,000 for the project “LpBound: Estimation of Query Output Cardinality with Theoretical Guarantees”. 
  • Prof. Burkhard Stiller has secured the following grants:
    • Together with Noah Bubenhofer, M. Christen, Sarah Summers and L. Ciragan from the UZH Teaching Fund (ULF), he received CHF 89,400 for the module “Interdisciplinary Introduction to Cybersecurity”.
    • Together with his team. he received CHF 129,260 from Armasuisse Thun for the CyberDFL project, “A Framework to Train and Evaluate Trustworthy and Secure Federated Learning Models in a Decentralised Manner”.
  • Prof. Claudio Tessone, together with project partners, has secured a €5.4 million EU HORIZON grant for the project “Combating CRYPTO-currency-Facilitated Crime and Terrorism with Interoperable, Trustworthy, AI-Enhanced”. Of this, €630,000 is allocated to UZH. 
  • Prof. Giorgia Ramponi has received an SNFS Starting Grant of CHF 1 million for the project “Multi-agent learning from demonstrations and human feedback”. 
  • Prof. Harald Gall and his PostDoc Dr. Pooja Rani received an SNFS grant of CHF 514’600 for the project “EdiSE: Energy-Driven Integration in Software Engineering”.​

Awards

Department of Business Administration

  • Katherine Rother, a doctoral student in Prof. René Algesheimer's research group, is one of two winners of the 2025 EMAC-Sheth Foundation Sustainability Research Competition.
  • Prof. Thomas Keil and his co-authors have won the William F. (Bill) Glueck Best Paper Award from the Strategic Management (STR) Division of the Academy of Management (AOM). 

Department of Economics

  • Prof. David Yanagizawa-Drott is one of this year's winners of the Yrjö Jahnsson Award. The European Economic Association presents this award every two years to European economists under the age of 45 who have made a significant contribution to theoretical and applied research in Europe. 

Department of Informatics

  • Prof. Davide Scaramuzza was named an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to micro-drones visual navigation and robust perception with event cameras.  

  • Prof. Anikó Hannák is one of four recipients of this year's UZH Mentoring Award. This award honours supervisors of doctoral students at UZH for their particularly committed support and encouragement. The other nominees from our Faculty were Alberto Bacchelli, Andrea Giuffredi-Kähr, Dieter Paff & Patricia Ruffing-Straube. 

  • Dr. Stefania Ionescu, nominated by Prof. Anikó Hannák, received the FAN Award 2025 in the field of law and economics. 

  • Prof. Dan Olteanu, together with his group and other researchers, has received the prestigious ACM PODS 2024 SIGMOD Research Highlights Award.
