Promotion of Prof. Anikó Hannák

As of 1 September 2025, Prof. Anikó Hannák has taken up the position as associate professor of social computing at the Department of Informatics, following her service as an assistant professor at the Department of Informatics of the University of Zurich.

Prof. Hannák's main interest is in computer-based social sciences, especially the co-evolution of online systems and their users. Broadly speaking, her work investigates the potential negative consequences of big-data algorithms used in areas such as web search, online shops and online labor markets.

To investigate this, she developed in her PhD work a methodology called Algorithmic Auditing to uncover the hidden negative impacts of such systems. Her audits have addressed issues like the "filter bubble" in Google Search, online price discrimination, and inequalities in digital labor markets.

Prof. Anikó Hannák received her PhD from the College of Computer & Information Science at Northeastern University advised by Alan Mislove and David Lazer.
