Studies and pregnancy

Gender equality and equal opportunities for women and men are important to the University of Zurich. In the event of pregnancy, compensatory measures can therefore be applied for.

Possible adjustments

Upon request, the following formal compensation measures are generally possible, whereby each petition is examined individually:

  • Deadline extensions and postponements
  • Interruptions for the duration of a semester or longer at assessment level
  • Module cancelations after the module booking deadline before the start of the examination
  • Petition to make up for a canceled module outside the current deadline (in the assessment or in the case of additional requirements/conditions)
  • Petition for suspension of a final thesis
  • Individual bringing forward of an examination (only possible if there are no organizational, legal or other reasons to the contrary. In any case, the basic prerequisite for approval is that the calculated date of birth falls on the examination date (+/- two weeks) and that the rescheduled examination can take place in such a way that no more than two weeks of the lecture period are missed. There is no entitlement for the examination to take place in the same examination format as the regular examination).

Other adjustments are not possible, as the qualitative requirements of the study program should be the same for all students. Changes to content requirements, the number of failed attempts or repetition options are therefore excluded.

Time for petitions

A petition for adjustments to studies must be submitted in advance. For example, the extension of an assessment semester to two semesters must be applied for at the beginning of the corresponding assessment semester. Similarly, a request for a module cancelation - after the module booking deadline - must be submitted before the start of the examination. Petitions for retrospective adjustments received after the deadline cannot be considered. Please submit any petitions for adjustments to studies as early as possible.

Documents to be submitted

Petitions submitted to the examination delegate must include the following information and enclosures in particular:

  • Proof of pregnancy (medical confirmation and calculated date of birth)
  • Requested adjustment to studies
  • The deadline and modules in question (including the module titles and codes)

The general specifications for petitions also apply. Additionally, please note the contact details on the right-hand side.

Submission of petitions

Once your petition has been assessed, we will inform you in writing which adjustments have been approved.
