26.11.20183 Questions to Anne Ardila Brenøe

Anne Ardila Brenøe joined our Faculty at the beginning of November 2018 as Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics, University of Zurich. Her primary research interests are in applied microeconomics. In particular, she is interested in labor economics, economics of education, and child development. In the introductory interview she explains her motivation to join the University of Zurich and what she would like to convey to her students.

What do you focus on in your research?

I am fascinated by the study of child and youth development because it brings important insights into how we develop as human beings. What shapes who we are? How does it affect our social, physical, and economic well-being? And how do we improve the life of people – specially the life of those born in disadvantageous socioeconomic conditions?  

What would you like to convey to your students?

Causality. That is the short answer. My aim is that all my students should know the difference between correlations and causation and know why it is important to study causal effects in order to better understand the world, in which we live.

What were the decisive factors for you to join the University of Zurich?

The stimulating research environment and high-quality research done at the University of Zurich were the most important factors for me to move to Zurich. Besides that, the city itself and the quality of life in Zurich was of course also important for the decision to move my family. So far, I really like being here and am looking forward to integrating more in the department and the social life in general.
